Scritto da Gauguin nei suoi ultimi drammatici mesi, Prima e dopo è l’estrema confessione di un uomo che vuole mettersi a nudo: un redde rationem in word sparse, nel quale si susseguono entusiasmi e sarcasmi, incanti e disillusioni. Pensieri e ricordi fluiscono rapsodici come nei sogni: l. a. bellezza del popolo maori; le idee sull’arte e sulla religione; l. a. brutalità e l’ipocrisia dei presunti civilizzatori… E poi van Gogh, Manet, Cézanne, los angeles Bretagna, Arles e altro ancora, perché accanto all’arte «ci sono molte cose da dire e bisogna dirle».
